Mayor welcomes new citizens
Mayor Ryan invites the community to join him in welcoming 49 new citizens toAlice Springs, on Monday 17 September from 9am, as part of national Citizenship Day.
“There’s something special about citizenship ceremonies, and it’s not just the welcoming of new residents to our community, but it’s also the coming together of so many nationalities and people that have chosenCentral Australiaas their home.” Said Mayor Ryan.
This year’s Citizenship Day ceremony will see a diverse range of people from a variety of countries such as Colombia, South Africa, New Zealand, United States, India, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Mexico, Germany, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Fiji, Malaysia, Kenya, Pakistan, Sudan and Papua New Guinea make their pledge to becoming an Australian citizen.
The Citizenship Ceremony will be held at the Civic Centre Function Room at 9am (guests to be seated by 8:55am) and will be followed by a light morning tea.
Celebrated annually on 17 September, Australian Citizenship Day is nationally recognised. It was introduced in 2001 to provide an occasion for individuals, schools, community groups and organisations to celebrate and value Australian citizenship and the peaceful, prosperous and inclusive society we share.
September 17 was chosen as Australian Citizenship Day as it is the anniversary of the renaming, in 1973, of the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 to the Australian Citizenship Act 1948.
