Old phones means more chickens
Alice Springs Town Council is urging the community to get behind the “Old Phones, More Chickens” recycling efforts this festive season.
Mayor Damien Ryan said “Council is working with not-for-profit organisations MobileMuster and the Oxfam Unwrapped program to ask the Alice Springs community to recycle their old mobiles to help both the environment and a family in need.”

MobileMuster research has revealed that 40% of Australians currently have two or more handsets at home that are no longer in use. Mobile phones aren’t biodegradable, but over 90% of the materials in mobile phones can be recycled into new products such as plastic fence posts, batteries, jewellery and stainless steel.
To get involved all you need to do is drop off two old mobiles (phone, batteries, chargers, etc) to the Civic Centre before Tuesday 31 January 2012. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Please ensure that all personal data is deleted from the phone and the SIM card is removed before bringing to Council for recycling.
As part of the national MobileMusterAlice SpringsTown Council hopes to collect as many mobile phone handsets as possible to save these recyclable materials from going to landfill.
