NT Councils disappointed referendum thrown to the scrapheap

Alice Springs Town Council is disappointed at the Prime Minister’s decision not to honour the Federal Parliament's commitment to hold a referendum to change the Constitution to protect vital federal funding for community infrastructure.
Mayor Damien Ryan said “Council is extremely disappointed that the Prime Minister has selected an election date which means the Referendum on recognising local government in the Constitution cannot be held.
“With 95 per cent of Federal MPs and Senators voting in favour of this Referendum, there will be a lot of disappointment across Australia at this decision."
Mayor Ryan said Alice Springs Town Council will continue work with the Local Government Associate Northern Territory and the Australian Local Government Association to provide support for the Referendum being held in the future.
"The facts still say that a change to the constitution is the best way to ensure our community have the most control over how federal money is spent in Alice Springs," Mayor Ryan said.
