This is an ongo­ing project by Sanche Zev that explores the inter­sec­tion of the desert’s sound­scape and human pres­ence. Using pay­phones as field recorders, Zev calls pub­lic phones across the West­ern, Cen­tral, and South­ern desert regions, cap­tur­ing both con­ver­sa­tions with strangers and the silence of the desert when calls are answered by no one. 

This evolv­ing col­lec­tion of audio, tran­scrip­tions, and pho­tographs exam­ines the voyeuris­tic nature of these inter­ac­tions, offer­ing a poet­ic reflec­tion on the intru­sion into pub­lic spaces. Through this work, Zev inves­ti­gates long-dis­tance com­mu­ni­ca­tion and the coex­is­tence of built envi­ron­ments with the vast, arid land­scapes they inhabit.
