Regional Waste Management Facility

Posted on 23 Dec, 2013

The move towards greater recycling at the Waste Management Facility in Alice Springs is going to change the way the people of Alice Springs view their rubbish.

The major infrastructure works at the Regional Waste Management Facility are drawing to a close after 12 months of redevelopment.

The latest area to be open to the public will be the transfer station located at the back of the Rediscovery Centre.

Director Technical Services Greg Buxton says it will allow the community to drop off their household rubbish into various recycling bins.

“The dimensions of the Recycling Centre are much bigger than anything that Alice Springs has seen before,” he said.

“We will be sorting, recycling and re-using everything we possibly can that people bring in.

“With that in mind, there is also a great opportunity for somebody with vision and retail experience, particularly someone who’s passionate about recycling or second-hand goods, to put their hand up to join Council’s team as team leader for the weighbridge and Rediscovery Centre.

“People may think it’s a bit of a man’s world – but the reality is that anybody with the right experience could do it.

“It’s a brand new, state of the art facility and we need somebody with vision, who is good with people and has that all-important retail experience; someone who can take the tip shop to the next level as the Rediscovery Centre - and get the people of Alice Springs excited about recycling.”

The redevelopment of the Waste Management Facility includes the 4000 sq/m transfer station where waste is sorted; the new weighbridge and salvage yards for second-hand products and the expanded retail centre – the brand new Rediscovery Centre.
