A statement from Aldermen Murray Stewart
“At the recent Alice Springs Town Council forum meeting on the evening of Monday 21 March, I informed the CEO, Directors and my follow Elected Members including the Mayor that I would not be standing for re-election at the March 2012 Town Council ballot.
I have made the decision that from that time my family needs more of my time as does the Desert Sports Foundation, who I both foundered and am the Chair of.
For those who supported me in both the 2004 and 2008 elections and to those who gave me their votes I’m bounded to you forever. I trust I have given you both good service and great value for your time, effort and dedication.
To those who have been critical I bear no personal grudges and indeed you are reflectant of the light and shade that make up our wonderful democracy.
I will leave council satisfied with many specific achievements. However in general terms I trust my legacy will live on in the continue good work of the finance sub-committee, tourism events & promotions committee and the seniors committee. These are all specific committees who I have foundered by resolution being firmly committed to the notion of Council’s economic reform, the promotion of our tourism industry and the passionate support of our central Australian seniors’ community.
I intend sprinting to the line, thus the next 12 month will see my usual intensity applied to the task of being the best possible Aldermen I can be.
Finally, I would like to thank my fellow Elected Members, all the staff Alice Springs Town Council and most important theAlice Springscommunity for being there with me for some of the most exciting years of my life.”
