Alice Springs Aquatic & Leisure Centre opening this Sunday!
Alice Springs Town Council is very pleased to announce that the highly anticipated Alice Springs Aquatic & Leisure Centre will be officially opened this Sunday 17 April from 9am on Speed Street.
Mayor Damien Ryansaid “It will be a historic day for Central Australia!”
“This project has been a long term vision for Council for many years, so it’s a great honour that we are able to open this fantastic facility to the community.” said Mayor Ryan.
This project wouldn’t be possible with out the support of both the NT Government and the Australian Government. Specifically the departments of:
- Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport.
- Department of Regional Australia, Regional Development & Local Government.
- Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs.
- and the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.
To officially open the new facilities the Mayor will be joined by Warren Snowdon MHR, Member for Lingiari and Mr Karl Hampton MLA, Northern Territory Minister for Sport and Recreation and former Mayor Ms Fran Kilgariff.
Mr Hampton said the Northern Territory Government is proud to have invested $8 million towards building the new facility that is set to attract thousands of visitors each year.
“The Centre is a fantastic asset for the people of Alice Springs and it is great to see all levels of government working together in partnership to deliver this project,” Mr Hampton said.
Mayor Ryan invites the whole community to Sunday’s opening, “Come along for the free sausage sizzle, family entertainment and be one of the first to use this state of the art facility.”
As an Alice Solar City iconic project, the facilities include 275 Heliocol solar collector panels installed on the roof to provide solar heating to the two new indoor pools and the two existing outdoor pools. This system will reduce the Centre's gas usage by an estimated 30% and save over 3450 GJ natural gas per year (equivalent to 350 tonnes CO2-e).
