LANDFILL WINDFALL
Alice Springs Town Council is pleased at today’s announcement for funding from the Australian Government of $3.5 million for the landfill.
The announcement was made today by the Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government, the Hon Simon Crean MP for the Regional Development Australia Fund.
Mayor Ryan said “We are absolutely delighted at this announcement as Council has been making many improvements at the landfill recently and this allows us to do so much more!”
“Council and the project team have been working on this for many months and with this announcement we can really start to develop the waste facility for the future.” said MayorDamien Ryan.
The objective of this planned upgrade is to develop an economically viable and environmentally sustainable waste management system with capacity to service the region for the next 30 years and achieve a 50% reduction in waste entering the landfill. The major components of this initiative include:
- a new waste transfer station,
- improved retail recycling shop,
- a new weighbridge and associated supporting infrastructure (e.g. roads, security gates).
