Over 10 days each September, singers, musicians and audiences from Alice Springs and Central Australia and visitors to the region experience something special. Choirs from the vibrant multi-cultural community come together to present a series of events that showcase the voice: the singer and the song.
Desert Song Festival 2016 is set to continue that tradition with a much expanded vision and program. The usual ‘suspects’ — Asante Sana and other Alice-based choirs and smaller ensembles, individual performers, and groups from different sacred music traditions will again join together in a number of events in a celebration of the singer and the song ‑through major concerts, chamber concerts, workshops, a Festival Club and an ‘open stage’. African freedom songs, Aboriginal traditional and sacred music, ballads, classical compositions, Caribbean folk music and a cappella singing will again make their appearance on the cultural smörgåsbord that is Central Australia.
New innovations for 2016 will see an expanded ‘instrumental’ section, a stronger presence in the Alice Springs CBD and greater participation from interstate and overseas artists. The ‘Centrepiece’ of the 2016 Festival will be a new musical work: “Desert Dreaming” — a somewhat autobiographical choral fantasia referenced by life and experiences in Central Australia 1995 – 2015, featuring Desert choirs, musicians, dancers and rear projection.
2016 marks the fourth year of the Festival’s existence and will see a major development of the program, scope and diversity of what has become a major music Festival in Central Australia.
