Alice Springs Town Council and McDouall-Stuart Lodge no.219 have agreed to locate the John McDouall-Stuart statue, which was gifted to Council by the Lodge, at the western end of Stuart Park on Stuart Terrace.

Rex Mooney CEO said “After discussions with the Freemasons, Council has progressed this project by filing an application to the Heritage Committee.”

David Stokes, McDouall-Stuart Lodge’s Worshipful Master, said “We are delighted that Council is following up the Lodge’s gift by making moves through the Heritage Commission to gain approval for erection of the statue in what the members feel is a better site, and we wait on the Minister’s approval with anticipation.  The delay in finding a home for the statue has been a struggle for both the Council and the Lodge, and after much heartfelt negotiation we are pleased to have reached a suitable platform from which to progress the issue.”

Council awaits further advice from the Heritage Committee on the application following its next meeting in October.
