This year’s Citizenship Day ceremony will see a diverse range of people from a variety of countries such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, China, Colombia, England, Fiji, India, Ireland, Italy, Lebanon, Nepal, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Reunion, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Thailand, Uganda, United Kingdom, U.S.S.R., Vietnam, Zambia and Zimbabwe make their pledge to becoming an Australian citizen.
Australian Citizenship Day is celebrated each year on 17 September. It is a special day to reflect on and celebrate being an Australian citizen. September 17 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the renaming of the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 to the Australian Citizenship Act 1948.
