Alice Springs Public Library hosts Melbourne Demons

Posted on 18 Feb, 2014

For the first time in Alice Springs, the Public Library will be hosting players from the Melbourne Football Club (the Demons) on Saturday 1 March for Read Like a Demon day.

The team will be in Alice Springs for their match against Geelong at Traeger Park.

Aimed at children with literacy problems, Read Like a Demon is a four-year-old program offering primary school children the chance to read with the players, do book quizzes, win prizes and receive a certificate and a book from the Read Like a Demon book series, along with other MFC give-aways.

Children from across Alice Springs as well as remote communities have been invited to the event.

Library Manager Georgina Davison says it’s great for children to have role models who encourage them to read.

“It’s vital for children to develop strong reading skills in primary school as it sets them up for a life of learning and development,” she said.

“Having the Demons come to the Alice Springs Public Library is fantastic.

“It’s a one-off for them as most people outside the metropolitan areas can only join the program online.

“We’re getting the program and the players in one day so we’re very lucky.”
